Abstract

The demolition of high-rise buildings in dense urban areas may generate dust, noise, and vibration that adversely affect environmental quality and activities in surrounding buildings. Assessing each pollution parameter separately does not provide a comprehensive picture of the overall environmental hazard level. This study analyzes environmental hazards in an integrated manner and determines mitigation priorities for the demolition of Building A, Jakarta, using a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS). An applied quantitative case-study approach was used. Data on PM2.5 concentration, noise, and vibration were obtained from the project area and two surrounding receptor buildings (Building B and Building C) and integrated using a Mamdani FIS with membership functions based on environmental quality standards. Mitigation priorities were determined from the hazard category, the dominant parameter, and a focus group discussion with demolition practitioners. All monitoring points fell into the high hazard category, with FIS scores of 8.4240 (Building A), 8.3868 (Building B), and 8.4315 (Building C). PM2.5 was the most dominant parameter, exceeding the standard at every point, followed by noise; vibration was recorded at 0.00 mm/s and requires continued monitoring during impulsive demolition phases. Mitigation should therefore prioritize dust control, followed by noise control, with continuous vibration monitoring. The findings are a preliminary, context-specific assessment and cannot yet be generalized to all high-rise demolition projects.
