Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the mathematical elements found in the traditional Sumba house in Weelonda Village and their connection to the cultural meanings held by the Sumba people. The study employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method. Mr. Aste Bili served as the informant, providing knowledge about the traditional Sumba house, while the research objects were the mathematical elements present in the structure. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that the traditional Sumba house embodies various ethnomathematical concepts related to activities such as counting, measuring, determining direction and location, and designing and constructing. These mathematical concepts are evident in the determination of dimensions and proportions, the spatial layout, and the building's form and structure. These mathematical elements serve not only practical functions during construction but are also linked to the values, symbols, and way of life of the Sumba community. Thus, the traditional Sumba house demonstrates that mathematical practices evolve in integration with the local community's knowledge and culture
